Whether you are a child, a teen or an adult, the best way to learn a language is by having fun! There are so many fun games to play in order to get used to vocabulary. I’m going to share a few of them over the coming posts. Some games you can play on your own, while others are fun played in a group.
In the Walt and Winnie’s Wondrous Words books levels 1, 2 and 3 I designed a word game to learn new vocabulary. I used to play this with children in my class years ago and it always went down well!
- Firstly you need a ‘New Words Book’. This can be on paper, a phone or a computer. On the left side of the pages you collect new an interesting words as you come across them.
- You might also want to write out the pronunciation, in a way that you can remember, below it.
- On the right of the page write the definition.
It’s a good idea to create your own personal dictionary by having a page for each letter. As you build up your vocabulary you can create a challenge!
You exchange your ‘New Words Book’ with a partner and play the WONDROUS WORDS GAME. Decide who is going first. You take the other person’s book and choose 10 words. You read out the definition and the first letter of the first word. The other person has to say the word correctly for 10 points and for another 10 Bonus points, has to spell in correctly.
For example, you say “It’s a book of maps beginning with an A”The other person has to guess “ATLAS” and then spell it correctly. Another good idea is to write your own sentence using the new word.
Don’t forget your copies of Walt & Winnie’s Wondrous Words Books 1-3. Each one specifically designed to improve your vocabulary, through stories, games and quizzes. Available now from Amazon.
